What Mark Twain really meant -- or said?

According to today's New York Times, the University of California
Press will publish in November the first of three volumes of Mark
Twain's unexpurgated autobiography, which he had in 1906 instructed
his heirs not to publish until at least the fifth edition, saying
"There may be a market for that kind of wares ["sound and sane
expressions of opinion"] a century from now."

Perhaps we will finally know whether Twain was the first to write

Joel
