allegory

Just a story that provokes a wee bit of thought beyond the unfolding of the
plot:

2008 David Thomson _Have You Seen...?_ (London: Penguin) 833: _La Strada_
(1954)...Even at the time, in Italy, leftist critics complained that this
stagy allegory had wiped away any prospect of social commentary....[T]he
idea of the film is that the brutal strong man dominates and bullies the
sweet, good girl but nevers conquers her spirit....[A] lurid fairy story.

The line about "social commentary" neutralizes any assertion that Thomson
sees the story as an allegory of gender: that indeed would be social
commentary.
