Am wondering why Chilean would "of course" have the stress in the middle. I
have always said Chilly for the country and CHILLY-un for the adjective. As
I recall just about everyone else in the USA did too until the 1980's when
there was a mass movement to over-pronounce Spanish words. This was parodied
in 1990 by SNL in a hilarious skit with Jimmy Smits about the whole
hyper-Spanish thing. Whenever I hear Chil-LAY-un now it just kind of makes
me shake my head and chuckle.
