The [1749 Cleland "freak out"] and friends

Just as a data point for citation, the Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention album <Freak Out!> was released in June 1966. Where I lived, the word "freak" became an approving synonym for "hippie" along about 1968, but I'm guessing Zappa got to it first with the lead track, "Hungry Freaks, Daddy."
