You might also have to go back a few
centuries. See the last spelling in the OED's
spellings: "Pl. heroes
({sm}h{shti}{schwa}r{schwa}{shtu}z). Forms: 6-7
heros, heroë, 6-8 heroe, 7- hero; pl. 4-7 heroës, 7- heroes (7 hero's)."
And there are 6 actual instances from 1650 through 1719.
