lithium eon batteries

Several times recently I've heard people on news shows talk about
"eon" batteries.  Just now on Morning Joe, Mike Barnacle used this
pronunciation talking with Sen. Levin about a new "eon" battery
factory opening in Detroit.  I've never heard this pronunciation of
"ion" until recently.  Are people actually unfamiliar with the term or
have I missed something?  Merriam-Webster Online has only /aian/ or
/ai at n/.
