1975 Paul Fussell _The Great War and Modern Memory_ (N.Y.: OUP) 247: One
notices and remembers what one has been  "coded" - usually by literature or
its popular equivalent - to notice and remember.

At the time of writing, Prof. Fussell was Professor of English at Rutgers
University.  His book has been very influential in litcrit circles.
