Yes. This was from a letter posted to another listserv. Not to mention
that the proposed alternatives,

"... a wry _smurf_ came over his face ..."

or

"... a wry _snork_ came over his face ..."

are so ridiculous that I suspect that you're pulling my leg. Or else,
I've entirely missed your point.
