FWIW, IMO, this should read

"... leavened _with_ stiffly beaten eggs"


Considering that I've heard and seen _by_ in the relevant environment
surely hundreds of thousands of times since at least 1970, I'm well
aware that mine is extremely likely to be a minority <har! har!>
position. But, IAC, I'm simply wondering whether even one other reader
agrees with this particular intuition.
