1842 _Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction_ 14 June 478 (British Periodicals) [quoting a book by J. E. Wakefield]  Their [New Zealand whalers'] whole language in fact is an _argot_, or slang, almost unintelligible to a stranger.
