I don't know how to model this, but --

If I had written "Like Fitzmas, there were multiple discoverers ...",
I might wonder whether it was the discoverers or the discovery that
was like Fitzmas -- and change to "as with" to preempt any momentary
hiccups in my readers.

Of course, in this example "Like Fitzmas, it looks like ..." is at
best awkward, as would be "As with Fitzmas, it looks as if ...".
