Doubtful. The nickel historically has been of too little value
to be of interest to counterfeiters, notwithstanding the implication of
the terms "plugged nickel" and "wooden nickel."

I'll bet the first counterfeiters (alterers) were in action pretty
rapidly, and their products discovered soon thereafter.
