Yes, that's the point of the phrase. My point is that, in
actuality, counterfeiters do not counterfeit nickels and never did (with
one or two minor exceptions that were notable for their oddity and are
unlikely to have had any linguistic effect).

But, isn't that the point: being worth even less than the debased
value of a counterfeit of an object that, even in its genuine form, is
already of trivial value?
