A good question, Tom. I myself have wondered why it is that speakers
of a wide variety of non-AmE dialects of English play such a prominent
role as voice-overers and shills, the Geico "gecko," the Sham-wow
(sp?) hustler, and that garden gnome springing readily to mind.
