Too good to ignore. Pitcher Fred Goldsmith, formerly of Anson's White
Stockings, said of Cummings,
"I remember when he pitched for the Atlantics of Brooklyn in 1869....We
called him 'Candy' Cummings, and I believe he could pitch a game through
in a full dress suit and never wilt a collar." (Boston Daily Advertiser,
Sept. 5, 1898, p. 6 [19th Century U.S. Newspapers]).
