Unfortunately, since the spelling coincides with spelling for some Italian
plurals, "emirati" is likely to be understood by uninformed readers (like
myself, when I first saw it) along the lines of "literati" (or, more
recently, "glitterati") to mean the elite, of the family of any emir, who
are infamous for carousing and consorting in all the trendy places. They're
what we used to call "jet-setters", or playboy princes, if you will.
