Copyright dates (was: reach for the sky (UNCLASSIFIED))

School textbooks are usually copyrighted two or three years ahead
because of the logistics of delivering them to schools. The editing
process is usually completed about 3 years ahead of the date and
printing within the following year (and continuously after that). The
copyright year coincides or is one year later than the state approval
competition year--either California or Texas. All the variant editions
get multiple copyright dates, including the one for the main series.

But this is a fairly recent invention.
