I'm confused. Why not,

"... is an easily-understood pattern known as a 'grid'"?


Isn't "grid" a member of "pattern," and not the other way around?

Well, judging by the names of the owners of the site, the person who
wrote this may not have ben a native-speaker of English. But still...
