The curious case of a terminus ad quem

Ah, thank you for this! I had been wondering about that. I have the
book, and read a reasonable way into it before setting it down for
two reasons: a) it was becoming exceedingly tedious; b) I was
wondering about its authenticity.

So the next question is, who did write it, and when? Undoubtedly a
tougher one to answer if no one is sticking their hand up, but it
would be fascinating to see further linguistic evidence adduced
towards the answer.
