Yet the Braves were comfortably AHEAD of the Cardinals for most of the season--until those stinking Cardinals, at the very end, drove the Braves out of the wild-card room (or relied on the Phillies' stench to do so).

CNN reports that in the midst of the Cards'  dramatic drive to the
pennant and the World's Championship, "The Braves began stinking up
the room."
