Prescriptivism in the U.S. is too much like religion: gurus preach vaguely
about a rectification of usage, while language science is popularly
considered an oxymoron. If there ever was a movement to lead the public to
think of language along scientific lines, it was ruthlessly obliterated by
a disastrous paradigm shift over the past half century. (8^o)
