pipe water

I was at a catered party this evening, and one of the guys at the bar referred to what I have always called "tap water" as "pipe water." I don't recall hearing that before (that doesn't mean I haven't, of course); I'm wondering if it's better known in some regions than in others, or whether it's more of an idiolectic or even nonce usage.
