To pick up the discussion from a while back:  in the 1940 picture _Doomed
to Die_ (starring Boris Karloff as the Anglo-Chinese master detective James
Lee Wong, rival of Charlie Chan and Mr. Moto) the actor Grant Withers says
both the following:

"a gun perMIT"

"You mean I've got the relatives of four hundred drowned people as
susPECTS?"

According to IMDb, Withers was born in Pueblo, Colo., in 1904, and worked
as a salesman and newspaper reporter before coming to Hollywood ca1928.
