metric mile

During the 1500 m race yesterday, the commentators repeatedly referred
to it as "the metric mile". This is reflected in a number of
print/online news reports as well and Farlex Free Dictionary has an
entry. So do Wiki and AHD, but not any of the Websters or other online
dictionaries. OED entry is a bit more complex, adding the 1600 distance
for horse races. But all dictionary entries limit the definition to
"Sport". Is this true?
