Another "voice" instead of "vocals"

I don't remember the discussion, but has "voice" been considered, in
the classical arena, the proper term for the "instrument", here a
person rather than an object (e.g., violin, piano, etc.)? I cite
OED, 6.a: "A person considered as the possessor of a singing voice, a singer."
