I had been looking forward to checking out this word all day long and then forgot to check the OED. It has citations back to 1980. Wiktionary has it, but the AHD does not.
Using a hyphen, I found citations to 1973 and 1974:
"Education and Culture," 1973 (http://books.google.com/books?id=hFMWAAAAYAAJ&q=%22tele-presence%22&dq=%22tele-presence%22&hl=en&sa=X&ei=udzfUNSPMs-10AHErIGoDQ&ved=0CFEQ6AEwBA)
"Veterans' administration annual report on exchange of medical information program," 1974 (http://books.google.com/books?id=jGrQAAAAMAAJ&q=%22tele-presence%22&dq=%22tele-presence%22&hl=en&sa=X&ei=udzfUNSPMs-10AHErIGoDQ&ved=0CEIQ6AEwAQ)
