I came across the following comment in a news story

> “We were continuing to be mired, and I think it’s important to move
> legislation forward,” he said in an interview.

The naked "mired" bothered me somewhat, so I was happy to discover that
this seems to be perfectly ordinary formation (quite old, in fact). But
then I started to compare quotes for mire v.1 and mired adj. Here's a
partial list without dates, sources--or article ID.

> Many of its competitors remained mired in bankruptcy.
> Even though we are mired down in theoretical analyses, the reason why
> the Third World is so desperate for some kind of new world order
> begins to come through.
