"awe" phoneme has disappeared

Tom,

Had you lived in the 14th century, what would you have done to stop the
great vowel shift? Today's "awe"  /ɔ/ was /ɑʊ/ then. Why can't you change
your "awe" to  /ɑʊ/ ?
