[Tom Zurinskas]

My son's home is out of power in South Jersey because of a thunder strom called a "derecho" in the newspapers.  I have never heard this word and neither have others I know in aviation.  Here is the pronunciation

So after giving us "tsunami" the weather people give us "derecho".  Tsunami has a silent first letter and it difficult to look up or say.  It replaces a perfectly good term "tidal wave" which will have to be used to look up old events.  Now "derecho" is a Spanish word that English folks can't pronounce because of the flapped r and "e" said as "long a".  In truespel the flapped r is ~q and when leading a stressed syllable it's doubled so ~daeqqaechoe  where ~ae is as in Mae.

So pracitice up on the fapped r folks.  Meanwhile I'll be saying "Wasn't that some ~daeqqaechoe you had?  And see how it flies.
