Hate to say it, but "awe-dropping" in CA long predates the period when reading was taught using "whole language"--which is NOT the same as "whole word", purely visual recognition methodology which was in vogue in the '50s (I used to teach a class on WL, which--if taught properly--allowed phonics in context, though not always in practice), . There's no connection.
