Spotted today on Romenesko, a journalism blog:

I'd never seen/heard "heads and tails above" previously, but it's in the
Eggcorn Forum. The contributor was Dixon Wragg, who noted more than 9,900
ghits in 2008. When I checked today, there were 119,000 ghits.



I'm picturing "heads and tails above" being about 18 inches higher than a
mere "head and shoulders above."
