Adoption of a Southern accent

In the episode of Royal Pains this week, a patient was diagnosed based
on the fact that she spoke with "a European accent" in some
circumstances. The character is supposed to be from Michigan, which
makes for the dramatic moment in the show when this is discovered.
Pretty weak tea (and worse medicine). Accent-aphasia?
