"expendable" = 'wasteful, extravagant, expensive'

 From an article on Whitey Bulger's and Catherine Greig's "life on
the lam," as revealed in documents from her court case:

"The documents also provide a glimpse into the way the two had lived
together in anonymity over the years: They had the cash in hand for a
lavish, expendable lifestyle, but lived modestly, practically as
hermits, with their home cluttered with items they essentially hoarded."

(Such as the 30 pistols, sawed-off shotguns, rifles, and a grenade,
and the $800,000 in cash, cached inside the walls.)

Apparently their golden years ("lifestyle") were not worth preserving
("they were expendable").
