"Your father has no kayak."
According to Sven Haskanson, executive director of the Alutiiq Museum
and Archaeological Repository in Kodiak, Alaska, and a doctorate in
anthropology from Harvard. He is part of a team about to restore a
140-year-old single-man kayak that has been ensconced on a high shelf
in storage space at Harvard's Peabody Museum of Archaeology and
Ethnology, perhaps ever since it was purchased from a collection in 1869.
The team is getting much information orally from the last speaker of
... no, the last traditionally trained Alutiiq kayak maker, Alfred
Naumoff. Project curator Trish Capone reported with a smile,
"Everything he said in there [on a visit to the Peabody Museum], we
did not know."
