1803 _Critical Review_ Apr. 500 (British Periodicals)  The commencement of hieroglyphics is referred by him [Zoega] to the time when the Egyptians and Ethiopians were one people.  Their introduction he considers to have been gradual, and the phonetic notes to have been of a later date.
