OED has nothing on this. But here's a sentence from one of the NYPL
menus being cloud-sourced for transcription online:

> Salted herring, sometimes called Maine sardines, are in net bags
> inside the traps.

I'm sure more can be found, but I have not looked--being entertained by
the menus for now. Apparently "sauer kraut juice" was big in the 1930s
and 40s.
