Jon Lighter has just published, in Occasional Papers in Folklore, an excellent monograph titled "The Best Antiwar Song Ever Written," pondering versions and variants--and the evolutions and relationships--of the old songs "Johnny, We Hardly Knew Ye" and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home."
