Perhaps Barry Popik or someone else has previously noted this, but the OED's 1897 first use of the term "sundae" seems to be antedated by an 1892 Ithaca Journal newspaper ad posted on the web:

http://www.visitithaca.com/about-ithaca-tompkins-county/birthplace-of-the-sundae.html

The ad, from the April 5 issue of the newspaper, is for "CHERRY SUNDAY. A new 10 cent Ice Cream Specialty, Served only Platt & Colt's Famous day and night Soda Fountain."
