Interpreting movie ratings, by Wesley Morris

Wesley Morris of the Boston Globe is becoming as
inventive as, if not more so than, the New York
Times movie critics. Cases in point today:

"The Master" [about the leader of a
spiritual/psychological cult whom some see as
modeled on L. Ron Hubbard] -- Rated: R (sexual
content, graphic nudity, language, worship of false idols).

"Step up to the Plate" [about father-son chefs
and their creations] -- Unrated [which often
means the wrong side of R] (shaved and puréed
vegetables; children in kitchens). [Oh those
perilous knives and white-hot grills! But
nothing untoward happens with them, I believe.]
