This was discussed here in 2005.

"Sammy" = "sandwich" is apparently more usual in New Zealand, along with 
"footie" = "football", "rellies" = "relatives", etc., etc., IIRC.

I don't recall ever hearing it in conversation myself, but I might not 
notice (I would probably take it to be jocular and/or baby-talk in most 
contexts). I have seen it very seldom written.
