Today is the 4th anniversary of Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger's
fatality-free landing on the Hudson River. Remains of the birds that
disabled both engines were so fragmentary that investigators had only
one feather (and, I think, some mushed stuff). They sent it off to
the Smithsonian Institute, where the head of the Feather
Identification Lab identified the intruders as Canada geese, and
brought several stuffed specimens to a hearing to demonstrate to
ornithology-challenged air crash investigators how large they
are. Her name? Carla Dove.
(Some information from a Boston-area radio news item.)
