The Dictionary of Modern Proverbs has an entry for: Old age (Getting
old) is better than the alternative. The earliest citation is an
attribution to Maurice Chevalier in 1960.
The QI website now has an entry with citations starting August 2, 1952
in the Long Beach Press-Telegram of California:
