RE: Rock star David Bowie (BO-wee): was born David Robert Hayward-Jones
(acc to Wikip under legendary James Bowie [BOO-wee]). His birth name was
too similar to The Monkees' Davy Jones; he admired James Bowie and his
Bowie knife, so became David [BO-wee]. Hey, WG: Bowie place names in Texas
also evidently [BOO-wie]. Wikipedia phonetic notation is pretty good. Hope
the legacy of Pullum & Ladusaw's <<Phonetic Symbol Guide>> will have a
lasting salutary effect on American attitudes towards IPA.
