neutrino (OED 1934 [28 Sept.])

1934 _N.Y. Times_ 8 Mar. 9 (ProQuest Historical Newspapers) In addition to the atomic particles known as the proton, neutron, electron and positron, Dr. Langer predicted that a fifth "building block of matter" would soon be discovered. ... Dr. Langer said that the new fundamental particle, which would probably be named the "neutrino," or little neutron, as suggested a few weeks ago by an Italian scientist, would resemble the neutron in carrying neither a positive nor negative electric charge, but would differ in possessing a much smaller mass,k amounting in terms of energy to about 6,000,000 volts.
