Using the subscription version of Genealogy Bank--

8 July 1916 _The Broad Ax_ Chicago(IL) 4/2 (Headline)Eighth troops swing in camp to "Jaz" band. [Not an antedating of jaz{z} band.] Later, in the article about colored troops from Chicago going to Texas, we read--"In the Eighth regiment are preachers, "Jaz" musicians, postal clerks, porters...."
