Not so ridiculous, perhaps. And not just because one does not have to carry around a flat-bed office copy machine. A useful application might be to take a picture of a skin growth on one's back to send to one's dermatologist.
Although I doubt that's why it was invented. My guess is to overcome the handicap of cell phone cameras not having a sufficient (actually no) wide angle "zoom" capability.

an attorney, that the selfie stick was invented specifically so that one
might take selfies of one's butt.
