University of Tennessee Emeritus Professor John Hurt Fisher, eminent
medievalist and former head of the English Department, passed away on
February 17 at the age of 95. John, who joined the department in 1972 and
retired in 1988, served as department head from 1976-78. He was active
professionally at the national level, serving as president of the Modern
Language Association in 1974. His books included *John Gower, Moral
Philosopher and Friend of Chaucer *(1963), *The Importance of Chaucer* (1992),
and *The Emergence of Standard English* (University Press of Kentucky,
1996). He edited *The Complete Poetry and Prose of Chaucer* in 1977. A
service for John will be held in Knoxville on Saturday, February 28, at
11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Cathedral.
