I recall using a "Neko" application on Windows in the mid-1990s where a cat did things on the screen.

There was also a very cute Macintosh screen saver, back in the days (early-mid 90s?) of flying toasters and fish in screen-sized aquariums, that featured cats chasing--was it birds?--across the screen.  It was called "neko", and it's where I learned the word.
