global village (OED 16 May 1959)

1959 _Globe and Mail_ (Toronto) 30 Apr. 23 (ProQuest Historical Newspapers) A significant Toronto social philosopher, Marshall McLuhan, has an explanation for these juvenile tastes. Modern media, he says, carry a subliminal message to the young -- a message they are not aware of but which they receive. The media contract the world to a village or a tribe where everything happens to everyone at the same time, in the sense that everyone knows about and therefore participates in everything that is happening the minute it happens. Modern media such as television give this quality of simultaneity to events in the global village.
