Nice discussion--and illustrations!  Re Ben's addendum and link to SNL's "Dyke and Fats", the excerpt (or maybe it was the entire episode) reminded me of the 60's "Mod Squad", with its immortal trio of Linc, Pete, and Julie: "One black, one white, one blonde".  This time, one gay, one fat, and one (well, their lieutenant) with great Chicago vowels.  As great as Dennis Franz's on NYPD Blue; unfortunately, detective Andy Sipowicz was supposed to have been a native New Yorker.
